Our Mission

The mission of Southwest Mississippi Area Health Education Center (SMAHEC) is to improve access to quality health care for rural and underserved communities in southwest Mississippi.   Southwest Mississippi Area Health Education center serves a six-county area:  Adams, Amite, Claiborne, Franklin, Jefferson and Wilkinson.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

Youth Health Occupation Orientation Conference

As a great pipeline and partnership for health career students, this year’s conference had 75 students participate. The conference is held at the Percy Quinn State Park Center located near Fernwood, Mississippi.

Community Health Fairs
SMAHEC offers it’s services at many of the community health fairs located in Adams, Claiborne, Jefferson, Franklin and Wilkinson Counties. The fair provides vision, cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar testing for the members of the community. Also offered are a series of immunizations. The program has brought service to more than 250 people in this area of the state.

Telehealth/Telemedicine

This project features the use of functional low bandwidth Telehealth/telemedicine solutions transported by multiple mobile means to remote areas in rural southwest Mississippi as a most effective approach to meeting the healthcare news of the underserved residents in this area.
