Enhancing the Practice Environment


Vision    

    

The Mississippi Area Health Education Center is to function as a statewide program in which the focus is the elimination of health care disparities, increased availability, accessibility, acceptability, and access of quality health care to all medically underserved populations and other identified Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA), awareness and prevention of disease is optimized, health care is viewed as an important aspect of economic growth and development, and health outcomes are equally optimized for all.

 

Mission     

Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is a statewide network that extends beyond University of Mississippi Medical Center’s (UMMC) campus.  AHEC is designed to enhance access to quality health care by developing programs that recruit and retain a diverse and culturally  sensitive health workforce that provides the highest quality of care for all.  AHEC supports and advances the improvement of the health of individuals and communities by transforming health care through education and training by offering the following:

    • Development of pipeline programs that provides educational programs for K-12 and undergraduate students that increase knowledge of healthcare and health care careers,
    • Expanding and increasing Residency/Internship/ Pre-clinical community education programs for recruitment and retention of minority health care professionals in underserved areas,
    • AHEC will create statewide database for health professionals that will assess health care professional labor force.
